Journey to Keystone Hero

JD Brooks became a first time donor to Dilworth Center as a guest at the 2018 Christina Browning Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser. “I was moved by the authenticity from those sharing about their experience with addiction and their subsequent recovery”, remarked JD. “I was amazed at how everyone was leaning in, captured by what the speaker was sharing. I’ve seen this at AA meetings but it was unlike anything I had ever experienced before at a fundraising event.” The following year, he stepped up to be a sponsor for the event. When he found out about a new opportunity for giving in 2020, he couldn’t wait to do more. This year, Dilworth Center introduced its Keystone Society. As part of this society, those who give a multi-year pledge to Dilworth Center’s scholarship fund are known as our Keystone Heroes.

“As a donor, I’ve always felt it was important to streamline my giving. I give to Dilworth Center because I am passionate about the work they do and I know where the money is going and the impact it is making.”

Dilworth Center played a big role in JD getting sober, he explains. “They were a great resource for getting me into an inpatient treatment program and a great resource for my wife as well! I believe they are an incredible resource for anyone trying to get sober, because they focus solely on helping someone suffering from addiction recover – not on making a profit.”

Originally from Birmingham, JD attended Clemson University where he played soccer all four years. He and his wife, Brannon moved to Charlotte 15 years ago. They have 2 children – Barrett, 12 and Graham,11 and own Iron Tribe Fitness, and an outdoor lighting company, Southern Lightscapes. “It is truly only by God’s grace and mercy that I am sober, I am convinced of that on a daily basis. I am thankful for the program of AA and for places like Dilworth Center who are based in the 12 steps.”
