Dilworth Center Launches Innovative Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Program to Elevate Patient Care

Dilworth Center is excited to unveil a groundbreaking addition to our treatment offerings: Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy. This exciting new program marks a significant advancement in our commitment to providing holistic and transformative care for individuals facing substance use and mental health challenges.

Tammy Hanson, COO of Dilworth Center, shared her enthusiasm about the new program: “At Dilworth Center, we are constantly seeking innovative ways to enhance our treatment services and better support our patients. The introduction of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy, made possible through the generous support of the Mecklenburg County ABC Board, represents a pivotal step forward. This program underscores our dedication to offering comprehensive, cutting-edge care that addresses the complex nature of recovery. We believe that Equine-assisted psychotherapy will provide our patients with valuable tools for their journey toward long-term recovery.”

Why horses?

Interacting with horses can teach us a lot about ourselves! Horses are social/herd animals. They have defined roles within their herd, and their main concern is safety and survival. Horses have individual personalities and moods. They are large and powerful, while also being prey animals. This leads to their innate ability to move and react to their environment, often simulating flight/fight/freeze responses. Horses are perceptive. These qualities provide natural opportunities to explore applicable topics including assertiveness, boundaries, communication skills, healthy relationships, and reactions to feelings including fear.

Why Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy offers a unique and effective approach to mental health and addiction treatment by incorporating interactions with horses into therapeutic processes. This experiential therapy will help patients in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) enhance emotional regulation, self-awareness, and communication skills. Engaging with horses will allow patients to confront their challenges and emotions in a supportive, non-judgmental setting, often leading to deeper personal insights compared to traditional therapy methods. The process aims to foster trust, empathy, and resilience—key components for successful recovery from addiction and mental health issues.

Our Expertise and Commitment

Thanks to the grant from the Mecklenburg County ABC Board, we have been able to train three of our dedicated staff members in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy. These professionals are now fully certified and ready to guide our patients through this transformative therapeutic experience. We are confident that this new program will positively impact our patients and their families, enhancing our comprehensive approach to mental health and addiction treatment.
