Dilworth Center Participates in National Recovery Month (NRM) Each September!

Addiction Treatment Centers National Recovery Month

At Dilworth Center, we understand recovery and healing go hand in hand. Fortunately, we live in a community that supports strong recovery. For the past five years, Dilworth Center has held its ‘Key to Recovery’ Scholarship Fundraiser in September to celebrate NRM and to raise funds for those who come to us hurting from addiction that find they cannot afford the cost of treatment. This year, thanks to Charlotte businesses, foundations and individuals, the event featuring keynote speaker Chris Herren raised over $400,000 in scholarship dollars!

While substance abuse services are nothing new, the stigma attached to them remains. NRM offers not only an opportunity to help eliminate stigma but to demonstrate the human face behind the disease. Former basketball star Chris Herren did just that. An extraordinary basketball player, Chris Herren was a celebrated star in his native Fall River, MA before graduating high school. He went on to play at Boston College and Fresno State, two seasons in the NBA – including one with his hometown team, the Boston Celtics – and seven seasons overseas before losing it all to the disease of addiction. With the unwavering support of his family and friends, Chris has been sober since August 1, 2008, and he now shares his story with the goal of making a positive difference in the lives of others.

No one is alone in the journey to recovery. Dilworth Center is invested in educating professionals and our community about substance use disorders and the effectiveness of treatment. NRM serves as a celebration of our commitment to improve access to information on addiction and treatment.

Along with education, NRM celebrates those who succeed in recovery. Each success story seeks to improve understanding and provide answers to those who still have questions. Families, first responders, clergy, employers, and communities as a whole play a part in recovery and awareness. Success stories come with barriers and obstacles and aren’t just for those living the struggle; they’re for those who help tear down the barriers.
