Recovery on the Fly

Recovery on the Fly : Healing lives one step into the riverine cast, one fish at a time.

From our tour guide, Steve Hanna:
Recovery on the fly was born out of my own personal pain growing up in a family with active alcoholism and war related post traumatic stress disorder. fishing provided a refuge and a spiritual connection that “clicked within my brain”.

My father was a WWII POW and taught me to fish. When he died I heard about a program for Veterans that used fly fishing ,fly tying and outings to help veterans adjust to the world post war. I decided it was a great way to honor my father and help other veterans. I helped start the first North Carolina chapter of Project Healing Waters at the Salisbury VA. Watching the healing and camaraderie that this program facilitated I decided to bring these amazing outing to those with addiction and mental health issues. I am so honored to provide this outing for Dilworth Center alumni. I hope to see you on the water and to teach you how to “tie one on”.

–All of my best,
Steve Hanna.
