WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
This presentation includes an overview of the creative nature of experiential psychotherapy and the use of creative interventions in the counseling setting. Utilizing the power of creativity to bring something into being, and use of creativity to assist clients in developing a greater connection to their emotions and allow for a deeper ability to tap into feelings and a loss of inhibition and self-censorship. Utilizing flexibility, risk taking, intuition, thinking outside of the box, spontaneity, and courage to temporarily suspend the rational process in therapy. Highlighted will be the value of collaboration in the treatment setting and utilizing strengths of the treatment team to assist clients with holistic and integrated healing and recovery.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
Participants will be able to:
- Explore the fundamental principles and assumptions that underlie experiential therapy, such as the importance of emotions and the mind-body connection.
- Describe how clients engage in hands-on experiences and role play to address emotional issues and gain insight.
- Discuss the types of issues or conditions for which experiential therapy is particularly effective, such as trauma, addiction, and relationship problems.
- Identify the advantages of creative collaboration in therapy, such as improving client outcomes and increased engagement.
- Learn effective communication strategies to facilitate collaboration between therapists, clients, and interdisciplinary teams in a treatment setting.

We have applied to the NC Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB) for approval of 2 substance abuse specific credits.

About the Presenters
Caitlin Rainwater, LPC, LCMHC, LCAS, CSI
Clinical Director, Momentum Recovery
Caitlin graduated with a Master’s in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and has been practicing as a clinician for 15 years. She is currently the Clinical Director at Momentum Recovery in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Caitlin has worked extensively in the field on improving mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders with adults and emerging adults. She views addiction from an attachment lens, valuing the importance of relationship and connection in the healing process.
Caitlin is trained in brainspotting, EFT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and utilizes a variety of experiential techniques in her practice. Not shying away from the pain of the human experience, her work with clients largely revolves around meeting them where they are to partner in walking though the healing process.
Jayson Ainsworth LCSW, LCAS, CSI
Primary Counselor, Momentum Recovery
Originally from Wilmington, N.C., James attended Catawba College to pursue his undergraduate degree. After graduating, he worked at a state funded residential treatment facility here in Wilmington and pursued his Certified Substance Abuse Counselor credential. After a few years he decided to return to school to complete his graduate degree in social work at UNCW. During his time in the graduate program, James interned at Momentum Recovery and was fortunate to be offered a position after graduation.
Deeply influenced by person-centered, strengths-based, and existential approaches to therapy, James is passionate about co-creating experiences of self-examination, discovery, and acceptance, so as to embrace and motivate the whole person. While strongly rooted in the strengths-based and cognitive-behavioral perspectives, he draws upon a variety of approaches based on the needs of the individual. James has worked with adolescents and adults on a range of developmental, mental health, and addictions-related concerns in community-based, outpatient, and residential settings.
Specific areas of clinical experience include substance-related and addictive disorders, depressive and anxiety disorders, trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and adjustment challenges. James holds a master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist, and is pursuing licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
In addition to counseling, James is passionate about hiking, meditation, surfing, making things with his hands, and spending time with his family and friends.
