Workshop Overview

In this presentation, Dr. Wilkerson will give a historical overview starting in the late 19th century of how addictive disorders were reviewed and dealt with in the United states. He also will review the importance of 12 step recovery in the history of treating addictive disorders and show evidence based studies that support those findings.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify methods in American history that were used to deal with substance use issue
  2. Explain how the Medical model and 12 step recovery techniques merged to advance the treatment of substance use disorders
  3. Be familiar with the findings in the 2020 Cochrane report that showed various beneficial effects from 12 step facilitation techniques
  4. List the factors in 12 step group meetings that aid in abstinence from alcohol

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Michael Wilkerson, MD
Medical Director at Pavillon

Dr. Michael Wilkerson has been working in the field of substance use disorder for over 25 years with a focus on treating healthcare professionals during the majority of this time. He has served as the Medical Director and Corporate Medical Director for Bradford Health Services in Alabama, and as Medical Director of Talbott Recovery Center in Atlanta, Georgia. As a native North Carolinian, Dr. Wilkerson returned to his “home state” when he joined the talented clinical team at Pavillon. Dr. Wilkerson is nationally named a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine in recognition of his high level of achievement and dedication to the field of addiction medicine.
