Grief is a complicated emotion that most people have to experience. While dealing with grief can be difficult for many, it can be especially challenging for those in early recovery. This presentation will explore the science behind grief and its impact on one’s mental health, specifically for those recovering from substance use. We will also look into ways to cope, therapeutic exercises, and methods for clinicians to avoid countertransference.


WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • identify different symptoms of grief
  • describe grief in their own words
  • apply techniques to their work with clients who are grieving
  • analyze how grief can impact clients in early recovery

Allyson Graham was raised in Stone Mountain, GA. She is an LCMHC Associate in North Carolina. Graham received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Xavier University of Louisiana. While in Louisiana, she gained counseling experience counseling individuals in university and substance use settings. Working in these settings taught her that one can implement social justice into clinical work and research.


Allyson is in the dissertation stage of her doctoral program in Rehabilitation Counselor and Rehabilitation Counselor Education at North Carolina A &T State University. She has continued her work with clients who have dealt with racial trauma, anxiety, depression and significant life transitions. She employs Dialectical Behavior Therapy during her sessions, using motivational interviewing, mindfulness, culturally responsive techniques that help clients understand their thoughts, which can start their healing journey.
